Customer Reviews

Good remote
I bought this to replace my old very dependable RCA 450 that finally bit the dust. I have an ancient Panasonic TV (20 years plus) and a very new Panasonic DVD/VCR recorder combo. It took a fair amount of time to get the new Philips to recognize my TV, but eventually it happened. However, twice it recognized the DVD/VCR when I was programming it for the TV. Eventually I understood how to override that tendency, and Voila!, the channel on my old Panasonic TV actually changed. I still love the RCA remote, but I think this is a very good replacement, especially for the price. Plus, the Phillips has the DVD functions on it which the old RCA did not have. (I still have the original remote control for my ancient TV and it still works just fine too. I needed the extra remote so that I can control the TV from more than one location in the house.) The Phillips is a good deal!

Philips PM3S 3-Device Big Button Universal Remote Control
This Universal Remote was up to my expectations. However, even if I had, there are NO instructions on how to USE the device, ie: record with the VCR, or play the DVD. People might say that remote controllers area all the same, and I probably could have figured it out, but for my 80 year old+ parents it would have been useless.
I would have rated it zero if I'd had the choice.

The company changed its great customer support
This company USED to have great customer support that made it simple to get their remotes working with your TV. You called, a human answered, a human who spoke English perfectly and knew what she was doing. The codes didn't work with my remote -- no problem, she beamed one to me over the telephone. After that the remote worked perfectly with my ancient TV.

So, when I needed a new remote, I bought another one from them.

Alas! They don't even have their phone number on their Web site anymore or even an email address. There is a form to fill out -- and they claim that they will get in touch with you if you submit it. But that doesn't work, either. Every time I tried to submit the form, I got the message that the server wasn't responding. I tried for several days.

I can't call them. I can't email them. The form doesn't work. The remote doesn't work.

This is too bad: I thought I had finally found an American company with great customer service. I don't know why they changed their policy, but they did -- and now, their customer service is like most computer companies' customer service: useless. No wonder our economy is in a mess!

Customer Reviews

Great remote for the price
Just bought this remote yesterday, so I cannot speak about durability. But after pondering over which Logitech Harmony remote to buy, for the past week, I came across Amazon's review for this remote. Though not as sleek and elegant as the Harmonies (I was looking at the 520, 550 and 720), I must say, for the price, this remote does all that I wanted from a remote.

The channel Up/Down buttons on our Samsung flat screen stopped working after 2 years. I wanted a replacement remote and was attracted by the Logitech Harmony line of remotes' sleek design and generally positive reviews. However the cheapest 520 was for and the other models went higher. Also the reviews indicated the battery life of the Logitech remotes was shorter due to their LCD screens and buttons blacklit glow feature.

After reading the reviews for this remote, I bought one from our local Sears store, selling for , just incase I needed to return it if it did not work with my TV. In a matter of minutes I was able to make it work for my TV, just by entering one of the Samsung TV codes that comes in the code list included in the remote packaging. Next I added my Pioneer DVD player. For special keys like Picture in Picture on the TV remote, you just make the Sony remote learn the command from the old remote by assigning it to any free button on the Sony remote. It's a very simple procedure, you just point both remotes to each other and follow a sequence of a few simple steps. Did the same for some special buttons on the DVD and have both remotes configured to this one instead. Infact I also went ahead and added the standing fan to the list so I can start/shut/rotate/oscillate and change speeds on the fan using this remote. Mapped it to the VCR button since I don't have a VCR :-).

The only minor issue is having to remember the various customized functions you have assigned to the various keys of the remote. Other than that, everything else is pretty straight forward. And at this price will not feel bad if the kids throw this around or if some buttons start dying in 2 years.

Great for most things, but not Dish Network!
I am using this universal remote to replace another universal remote that cost 5! I does almost everything the expensive one does, but if you have Dish Network, keep your Dish remote handy. I had to use the learning function to "teach" the Sony all of the Dish remote commands. Most are OK, but the annoying thing is that the directional buttons, which are constantly used by us satellite watchers to browse the guide or select porgramming. Apparently, when the Sony directional button is depressed, it only sends a signal once, and will not move the selector on the screen more than one position. The Dish remote will continuously move the selector in any direction, as when you are moving through the program guide. To make matters worse, most of the time, you have to press the button twice to get it to work. Had I known this before purchase, I probably would have kept looking. However, now that it's all programmed, I have narrowed down to 2 remotes, instead of 5. Nice job for an inexpensive remote control.

Some weird hiccups
I had high hopes for this remote and in most regards this remote met them. The learning feature is ridiculous. I have a WD TV which is not supported at this time but I was able to teach the remote everything I needed under the SAT button(including power). But still, not perfect.
I have a Sony AMP and this thing didn't control it. Thankfully I was able to teach it everything using the learning but this was not something I want to do for a full remote. This remote lets you set the volume control to either TV or AMP but its an all or nothing affair and I had to change my wiring to deal with this. Also, I don't know if this is because I had to set everything under AMP manually but the volume control works in increments of one. By that I mean I cannot hold down the volume buttons to raise it or lower it a lot.
I also had a weird problem with left and right being reversed out of the box.
Oh and this may be nitpicking but its not comfortable in the hand. The wedge shape makes is off balance and the edges do not make me want to keep it in my hand.
Overall it is a nice remote. It does everything it says it will. The learning feature is invaluable, but there are somethings that could have been improved.

Awesome and Affordable
I've been reading Amazon reviews for years, but this is the first one I've written - THAT'S how much I love this remote! First, let it be said I don't consider myself particularly "tech savvy" - I can read a set of instructions, IF they're well written - fortunately the manual for this remote is well laid out and easy to follow.

About my equipment: for Christmas, I bought a Pioneer Kuro PDP-5020fd HDTV and a Panasonic DMP-BD35k Blu Ray player for myself (um, I mean, for my FAMILY :) but at present I am mixing these modern technical marvels with a much older stereo system (NAD stereo amp and CD player) and even older Sony VCR for recording. All this with a cable box to boot. So you can imagine how many remotes I was trying to juggle. I was concerned that this cheap remote (got it under ) might not be able to control such varied things effectively. Also I noticed that Amazon's "bestselling" lineup for universal remotes had the much more expensive "Logitech" brand in the top 6 slots, followed by this remote. These Logitech remotes ranged in price from about to a whopping 0. Now I generally agree that you get what you pay for, so I was worried this little remote might not do the job. I'm so happy to report I was totally wrong!

The Blu ray player worked great after simply keying in the (provided) code, but the Sony had to "learn" some of the TV's remote control functions. This was easily accomplished following the manual. That said, in fairness I didn't try to teach the Sony every single command from the original remote - frankly if I need some of the more obscure commands once in a while it'll probably be easier just to dig out the Pioneer remote. But the 10-12 basic things I taught the Sony will easily satisfy my needs 90% of the time. Also, the codes provided for NAD wouldn't work on my older stereo amp. However with the "Codesearch" option I was able to find the right code in 5-10 minutes, and it worked fine. Finally, because I sent the sound from the TV through my stereo amp, I found that at first I had to switch to the remote's "AMP" button every time I needed to mute or adjust the volume - very annoying. But Sony was way ahead of me - they addressed this issue in the manual, and after a few easy button presses the volume/mute worked regardless of whether I was set on TV, cable, or amp. Sweet.

I did notice some of the other reviewers seem to have had some issues with programming various components, so I imagine it would be advisable to contact the manufacturer for advice if you have any unusual brands. But all I can say is everything worked perfectly for me. Best of all was the "One-Touch System Control". It was a snap to program ONE button to turn on the TV, cable box, and amp when I want to watch TV. BING, one button for everything "on" or "off". There are four of these system control buttons, so I programmed another to turn on the TV/DVD/amp when I want to watch a movie, and another to turn on only the amp/CD player when I just want to listen to CD's. Really, really nice.

Not to rag on other brands - I'm sure the Logitechs are super-cali-fragi-listicly fancy, with their LCD screens and all - but honestly for day-to-day use it's kind of hard to imagine that the average consumer really NEEDS to spend up to 10 times as much as for this little sweetheart. KUDOS, Sony!

greate remote
This is a wonderful universal remote. If you are looking for a remote control to operate all of your electronics devices, buy this one. The best feature is the system configuration feature in which you can turn everything on and off at the same time. Very convenient and easy to use.

Customer Reviews

How could you live without one???!!!
I have been using my Harmony since Christmas. As an IT guy I was especially impressed with the configuration process. I could have given this thing to my daughter to setup and she would have been done in less than 30 minutes. It's easy to setup, easy to use, and just plain cool!

One thing I was impressed with was it's ability to control our 360. We have my sons account setup to be the default Xbox account, so when I want to play something, I can turn it on, log him off, and log myself on without even picking up a controller. I have had no issues with it at this point. I like the fact that the battery is a drop in and easily replaceable... we'll see how long it will last with being recharged a few times a week, but ultimatly it won't be a big deal since the batteries are cheep.

Get one!

Poor reliability!
I have owned this remote for slightly more than one year. The first unit failed within a few months and after a lot of aggravation I received a replacement. After using this replacement for approximately 8 months it's failed too. The remote worked well initially but the quality control and product durabilty are questionable at best. This remote has not seen any hard use nor has it ever been dropped yet it has failed again just outside of the warranty period. If you must have this item buy an extended warranty as you're going to need it.

a lifesaver! well worth the money
Getting this remote has made it a lot easier to use our home theater system. The system has many different components - receiver, DVD player, TV, cable box/DVR, ipod & dock, each with separate remotes. Watching TV or switching from cable TV to DVD required pushing buttons on 3 different remotes, in a particular order. Not too hard for me, but nearly impossible for my parents (when they visited, I had to write down instructions on what buttons to push to watch a DVD - and even then, they'd call me at work for "support").

The Logitech Harmony ended these frustrations. Now, there's ONE remote, and you touch ONE button to watch TV or switch to DVD. The remote knows what combination of commands to send to each device and in what order.

How does it work? When you first get the Logitech Harmony, you install software on your computer. You tell the software the brand and model number of each component in your home theater system. The software constantly updates from Logitech's online database of components, so you never have to worry that your components won't be supported by the Harmony remote.

Once the software knows each of your components, you define "activities," such as "watch TV" or "listen to iPod" or whatever. This is very easy - just tell it which of your components are used for each activity.

Finally, connect the Harmony remote to your computer via the supplied cable (which is a standard USB cable, not proprietary). The software loads the relevant information onto your remote, and you're done. The whole setup process takes 15 minutes - and most of that time is just looking up the model names and numbers of your components.

Now your remote is ready. Just press "watch TV" and it will turn on your receiver, your cable box, and your TV. Press "watch DVD" and it will turn off your cable box, turn on your DVD player, and change the receiver from cable TV to DVD.

The Harmony even controls my iPod, when docked in my remote-capable Apple iPod dock. (Only for next track, previous track, stop, pause, play, and volume, just like the typical Apple iPod remote.)

Now when my parents visit, they can entertain themselves with DVDs or TV while I'm working, and they never need "tech support" with the home theater system. Just their computer, but that's another story.

In sum, the Logitech Harmony is a well-designed and very easy to use product, and I think very well worth the money.

The TRUE Universal Remote
I'm not one to write many reviews, but this remote is truly worth the money. After trying and struggling with "Universal" remotes (what Universe?), I thought I'd take one last stab at getting something that would work with everything. Past remotes would only work with a few of my devices or work with everything but not give me all of the functions of the original remote. (I have a Technics CD changer, DirecTV DVR, Panasonic TV, Toshibe DVD, Sony VCR.) The Harmony 880 controls everything AND every feature works on every device. Set up is easy and Logitech will continue to add to their 5000+ device database. Shop for price! I got this one from Amazon new for 9.00. The prices seem to change like the stock market. Amazon had it for 9, Circuit City for 9. When I was about to buy, I checked Amazon one last time and it came to 9 with free shipping and no tax! If you're tired of wasting your money or juggling remotes, then consider spending a little more for something that actually does as advertised. I'm sure that the less expensive Harmony's would have done the trick too, but I liked the LCD on this one. I'm not having charger issues like others, but what I received works well. The new one has just 2 charging contacts and it sounds like Logitech will take care of you if you have problems. I've dealt with Logitech for mouse / keyboards in the past and they were always great to work with. My only problem is that when I use my CD player, the remote wants the TV on. I'll contact Logitech on that minor issue, but it's probably my error on setup. Again, this is the BEST remote I've ever found and it lives up to the hype!

Fantastic
The Logitech Harmony 880 is an absolutely fantastic buy. Considering how much you pay for other "Universal" remotes that are really not universal at all, you can't go wrong with this product. I've had mine for a little over a year now and I still have friend who are amazed at how great this thing is. The device database is constantly updated and configuration is very simple. I've long been a fan of Logitech products as they have always exceeded my expectation. This is another feather in their cap as far a my experience is concerned. Keep up the great work Logitech.
